London, United Kingdom – March 6, 10am BST: Today, Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) in partnership with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) launched a first of its kind environmental, social, governance (ESG) risk assessment tool for feed ingredients. The tool will improve visibility into supply chains, allowing stakeholders to better identify and address possible ESG risks. GSI and WWF designed the tool to support the salmon farming sector, but the wider animal protein production sectors, including livestock, may also benefit from its use.

The facility will process salmon from Grieg Seafood’s production in both the North and South of Norway. The investment is a part of the company’s strategy to increase value creation and process more of its own fish.

The new land-based facility, which is estimated to cost 1.1 billion NOK, will produce 300 tonnes of post-smolt starting in 2026. Post-smolt improves survival, fish health and welfare as well as sea lice control, according to Grieg Seafood’s experience from Rogaland.

The first generation of fish in Placentia Bay in Newfoundland has been farmed with good fish health and welfare. Grieg Seafood will continue to develop its farming region in Newfoundland gradually and responsibly.

Today, the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), which Grieg Seafood is a part of, has published its final Recommendations for nature-related risk management and disclosure.

Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) will develop a risk management and financial disclosure framework on nature-related risks. Alongside global financial institutions and businesses, Grieg Seafood will take part in the initiative as a Taskforce Member.

The consortium aims to reduce the environmental impact and improve fish welfare through innovations within offshore and closed technologies, biology, fish feed, electrification, digitalization and logistics. The project is granted 96 million NOK from the Norwegian Research Council.

According to an independent assessment of the environmental consequences, the impact of the spill is temporary and limited to the marine area around the harvesting plant in the Kåfjord. Recovery and recolonization of biodiversity is proceeding rapidly.

Grieg Seafood ASA has entered into an agreement with Scottish Sea Farms Ltd for the disposal of all shares in Grieg Seafood Hjaltland UK Ltd, the parent company of Grieg Seafood ASA’s Shetland business. The enterprise value is set to GBP 164 million, assuming a normalized working capital, and to be adjusted for cash and debt.

Data-driven knowledge has already improved insight into some of the industry’s most pressing fish welfare challenges. Still, we are only at the beginning of the digital transformation in salmon farming.

Our experience so far with the transfer of post-smolt salmon to our sea farms indicates they are less vulnerable to disease and need fewer sea lice treatments. Reducing the time farmed salmon spend at sea is poised to strengthen ocean farming.

Prevention is key to all good things in salmon farming. Grieg Seafood's new fish health boss has plans in place to improve fish health and welfare throughout the company.

The move makes Grieg Seafood the first global salmon producer to invest in land-based salmon farming.

The company has received 3 development licenses for the offshore concept “Blue Farm”. The company will now evaluate the decision and decide next steps.

The Brazilian soy suppliers to the salmon industry, CJ Selecta, Caramuru and Imcopa, will implement a 100 percent deforestation and conversion free soybean value chain with 2020 as their cut-off date. No soy grown on land deforested after this deadline will be traded. This bold and historic move sets a new benchmark for global sustainable supply chains.

Going forward, Grieg Seafood will sell their Canadian and Scottish salmon from their new, fully integrated sales and market organization. The sales joint venture Ocean Quality has been dissolved.

Grieg Seafood is granted five new farming licenses in Newfoundland, reaching eight licenses in the region, corresponding to a total production capacity of up to 30 000 tonnes of annual harvest.
