First salmon eggs placed into Grieg Seafood’s new hatchery in Newfoundland

A milestone was reached in Grieg Seafood Newfoundland’s history as the first salmon eggs were put into the new hatchery in Marystown in July.

The build-up of the new region is progressing on schedule with the first fish scheduled for harvest in 2022/23. The construction of the land-based facility is taking place as planned. Substantial progress has been made with the First Feed and Smoltification Buildings. The facility has been commissioned, the first eggs are put into the hatchery and specialized equipment is installed.

“We are building up a brand-new region for salmon farming in Placentia Bay, and placing the first eggs into our new hatchery is an important milestone for us. I am very proud of our staff for the hard work they have done,” says Candice Way, Production Director Land and Sea at Grieg Seafood Newfoundland. “We will move ahead carefully and steadily, based on best practice from Grieg Seafood’s four other regions.”
